Inside Sky International Kindergarten of Batumi: A Day in the Life of an Early Years Learner

One of the questions parents ask at kindergarten is: “What does a typical day look like for my child?”

It’s a natural question. Sending your child to kindergarten is a significant milestone, and you want to know that their days are filled with purpose, safety, joy, and meaningful learning.

At SKY, we don’t view the day as a rigid checklist of lessons. Instead, we design an intentional, flowing rhythm grounded in early childhood research. By combining the British Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework with Reggio Emilia inquiry principles, our daily routine balances structured skill-building with child-led play, outdoor movement, dual-language immersion, and soothing mindfulness.

Here is a glimpse into how a day unfolds inside the world of a SKY learner.

A Soft Landing: Morning Arrival & Breakfast

The morning sets the emotional tone for the entire day. As children arrive, they are greeted warmly in both English and Georgian by their educators. Transitioning from home to school is a big step for young minds, so we prioritize a gentle "soft landing."

Children hang up their coats, check in with their feelings at our emotional readiness board, and join their peers for a wholesome, fresh breakfast. This unhurried start allows children to feel secure, nourished, and socially connected before diving into active learning.

Why it matters: Predictable, warm arrival routines reduce separation anxiety and build emotional resilience, helping children feel safe to explore.

Morning Circle & Dual-Language Literacy

Morning Circle & Dual-Language Literacy

Once breakfast is complete, the room gathers for our Morning Circle. This is where language comes alive! Rather than drilling flashcards, our bilingual educators model vocabulary in real time through interactive storytelling, music, movement, and group discussions.

During structured literacy time, children explore letter sounds, phonemic awareness, and rhyme in playful, low-pressure ways. Whether singing a weather song in Georgian or reading an interactive storybook in English, children learn to switch between languages seamlessly.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Dual-language phonics,

  • Oral storytelling

  • Social-emotional check-ins, and active listening.

Thematic Learning Centers & Guided Inquiry

Following circle time, the classroom transforms into a hive of child-led discovery. Inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, our learning centers act as "the third teacher." Spaces are curated with natural materials, loose parts, and open-ended tools that invite hands-on inquiry. Children move freely between specialized zones:

  • STEM & Construction Zone: Testing gravity with wooden blocks, building bridges, and solving spatial puzzles.

  • Sensory & Scientific Inquiry: Exploring sand, water, light tables, and natural textures.

  • Expressive Arts: Painting, clay work, and creative design.

  • Role-Play & Language: Drama corners that encourage peer negotiation, empathy, and rich conversation.

Educators move intentionally throughout the room—observing, asking open-ended questions, and scaffolding children's thinking without taking over their play.

Outdoor Exploration & Gross Motor Play

Outdoor Exploration & Gross Motor Play

Young children learn with their entire bodies. Every morning (and again in the afternoon!), our students head outdoors for extended outdoor play and continuous provision. Whether climbing, running, balancing on natural paths, or investigating garden insects, outdoor time gives children space to test their physical limits safely.

The Early Years Benefit: Gross motor development directly supports fine motor skills! Strong core and shoulder muscles built on the playground are essential for writing with a pencil in the classroom later on.

Mindfulness, Yoga & Recharging

Mindfulness, Yoga & Recharging

Early childhood learning is active work, and young brains need deliberate pauses to process new information. Before lunch, the classroom dims, soft music plays, and children gather for a short mindfulness and yoga session.

Through playful breathing exercises ("breathe in like a flower, blow out like a candle") and simple yoga stretches, children learn self-regulation tools that stay with them for life.

Following a balanced, nutritious lunch, children prepare for rest. Extended nap and quiet time allows young bodies to recover and supports cognitive memory consolidation. When children wake up, a brief gentle yoga transition helps them re-awaken feeling calm and focused for the afternoon.

Afternoon Numeracy, STEM & Logic

Afternoon Numeracy, STEM & Logic

After a light afternoon snack, our second circle time focuses on Early Numeracy & Logic. Early math at SKY is tangible and visual:

  • Counting real objects found during outdoor play.

  • Sorting shapes and identifying visual patterns.

  • Measuring water or sand during sensory challenges.

  • Working through collaborative logic puzzles.

By connecting math to physical experiences, children develop a deep, conceptual understanding of numbers without the anxiety of abstract worksheets.

Closing Circle & Goal Reflection

As the main school day winds down, children gather for our Closing Circle. Reflection is a cornerstone of self-awareness. Together, we ask:

  • "What made you feel proud today?"

  • "What new word or skill did you try?"

  • "How did you help a friend?"

Children reflect on their learning goals, pack up their belongings with pride, and prepare for pickup at 5:00 PM. For families seeking further enrichment, our optional After-School Clubs & Extracurriculars (5:00 PM – 6:00 PM) offer specialized activities in creative arts, movement, and science exploration before the evening ends.

Learning, Play & Growth in Every Day

At SKY, a day in the life is more than just hours on a clock—it is a carefully crafted environment where children feel heard, supported, and challenged. By balancing rigorous early academics with deep play, outdoor movement, dual-language immersion, and mindfulness, we help every child step into their potential with confidence and a lifelong love for learning.
